In the framework of REMIT, E‑Control is charged with comprehensive monitoring functions, which are further defined by the provisions in REMIT itself and in the Elektrizitätswirtschafts- und -organisationsgesetz (Electricity Act) 2010, the Gaswirtschaftsgesetz (Natural Gas Act) 2011 and the Energie-Control Gesetz (E-Control Act), which implement the Regulation in Austria. REMIT itself as well as its national implementation in Austrian law define a multi-part monitoring system in which, in addition to E-Control, also other authorities, market places and persons take over monitoring functions and have to report any irregularities in energy wholesale they have observed to E‑Control.
